Queer ecology - or how to become more-than-one

What is natural? Where is nature? What does queer have anything to do with it? Offering an intersectional perspective on nature, more-than-human and more queer ecology shows the inherent interconnectedness between things: be it the bacteria living on human gut, or mushrooms in a forest or humans living in the web of a city. We will look into how queer ecology as a critical theory came about, with its connections to ecofeminism and queer theory. We will focus on symbiosis as a queer phenomenon through a journey from science fiction to science fact by looking into popular media like Star Trek and connect them to philosophical questions on the individual – or the lack there of.

A coming-of-age film about the ruthless act of racism, domestic and sexual violence that harasses Celie Harris throughout her life. It is a story about courage, strength, perseverance expressed through Celie's pursuit to reunite with her sister. A discussion will take place afterwards, creating a safe environment in which we can draw attention to these topics.

Will boys be boys?? A feminist exploration of masculinity
.jpg.rendition.792.1267.jpeg)
Everyone has preconceived notions and beliefs about masculinity and femininity. We have picked them up simply by growing up; through family, friends or bullies, education, by what we hear and see in popular culture. Often, people find it difficult to talk about these concepts. Let’s come out and say that it doesn’t have to be. Nothing has to be predefined –things are what we make them! Join us for this event and let’s explore masculinity together. For this event we will come together to be curious about our own beliefs and behaviours, and to reflect on our preconceived notions. What does it mean to be masculine? How do we celebrate our ways of being? How can we become better at recognising toxic behaviour? Questions like these (and many more) will be explored through immersive storytelling with the artists’ collective SPACE and sharing circles guided by the collective menSEN. Dinner will be provided, and in the evening, we will enjoy a drag performance. We warmly invite people of all ages and genders -whether you have been socialised as a man, a woman, or in another way- to join the conversation. The main language is English but translators will be available if you are more comfortable speaking Dutch.
Note: For those that wish to celebrate this event with a gender-bender outfit, they’re more than welcome to do so!

----------

In Conversation with Splinter Chabot

Splinter Chabot, writer, television host, and political scientist, is coming to Wageningen! In a personal interview, Splinter will delve deeper into queer identity.
With his book Confettiregen (Confetti Rain), he offered an intimate and disarming insight into his struggle and path to self-acceptance as a young gay man. The book struck a chord: countless readers shared their own experiences with him. These stories became the foundation for Roze brieven (Pink Letters), a collection full of honest, moving, and powerful voices from the queer community.
During this evening, we will talk with Splinter about his personal journey, the reactions to his books, and what it means to be queer in the Netherlands today. How do we deal with visibility, safety, and representation? What challenges do we face and how can we support each other?
Would you like to join the conversation with Splinter? Come along! Everyone is welcome. After the talk, you’ll also have the opportunity to buy Confetti Rain or Pink Letters and have them signed.

Pride, Protest, Print – From Criminalization to Collective Creation

As anti-LGBTQ+ laws and rising fascism threaten queer lives across Europe and beyond, this event offers us a space for learning, dialogue, and creative resistance. The event begins with a talk on the banning of Pride and the criminalization of queerness globally. After the talk, we’ll hold an open discussion to reflect and ask questions. The session concludes with collaborative zine-making—an opportunity to express, illustrate, and document our shared resistance through writing, art, and collage. Come co-create a zine that speaks out against injustice and uplifts queer voices worldwide.
